This website brings together a wealth
of resources. It is a useful starting point when exploring meanings and
explanations of difference in relation to the workplace. It is important
to be aware that all definitions of diversity and difference are embedded
in social and political contexts; in other words they can never be completely
value-free, neutral or objective, but are always written from a particular
perspective or view point. This site includes well-written explanations
of diversity relating to race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual
identity and work life balance. There are also relevant reports, news items
and links to other websites. There are no explicit connections with health
care contexts, but would help in the development of anti-oppressive practice.

Please refer to the professional standards
of the British Sociological Association on non-sexist, non-racist and non-disablist
language. You will find these guidelines in the resource section of the
Equality and Ethics pages. Remember that using non-sexist, non-racist and
non-disablist language is not just about ‘political correctness’.
Rather, by using language in a thoughtful and reflective way, you will avoid
reinforcing unhelpful assumptions and prejudices. It may also enable you
to challenge stereotyping and discrimination.
